What is "sonata" in music?
A sonata is a type of musical composition written for a solo instrument or a small ensemble. These works usually consist of two to four distinct sections called movements - each with its own character and tempo. Inspired by this structure, our The Recital event is named "Sonata" featuring two unique movements. Each movement highlights the dedication, growth and individuality of our students, reflecting the diverse musical journeys they've taken over the year.
The term sonata was historically used to distinguish instrumental music from cantatas, which referred to vocal music. It translates to "to sound" emphasising the instrumental aspect. In a similar vein, our students will be performing instrumental music featuring the piano, the violin, or both.
Famous composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn wrote many sonatas that remain central to classical music today.
